Batdorf, Jacob

The Newton Kansan

Kansan, Monday, February 19, 1923.


Jacob Batdorf, aged 95 years, on of the oldest citizens of Newton passed away Sunday night at 10:30 at the residence of Mrs. Bertha Landon, 122 West Eighth, where he had made his home for some time.

Mr. Batdorf was born in Berks county, Pennsylvania in 1828, and moved with his parents to Ohio when ten years old. He joined the German Reformed church when 16 years old. he was married to Miss Matilda Stine in April, 1850. They moved to Kansas in 1871 and Newton had been his home ever since. Mr. Batdorf was the father of five sons and three daughters, of whom only two sons survive. They are Edwin of St. Louis, and Charles of Brooklyn, New York.

Mr. Batdorf became a member of the Presbyterian church in Newton in 1873 and was a faithful member until his death. he assumed the proprietorship of the American hotel here more than fifty years ago, and he has always taken an active interest in the welfare and prosperity of the community.
