Flinn, Dorothy

The Newton Kansan

Kansan, Friday, September 26, 1923

The presence of a large number of close friends, and the wealth of beautiful floral offerings at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Somers at 323 east Fourth at two o'clock Thursday afternoon were silent tributes to the friendship cherished for their daughter, Dorothy, wife of John P. Flinn. The Rev. Fred Fufle, rector of St. Mathews church read the ritual of the Episcopal church and the church quartet, Mrs. T.E. Young, Mrs. Paul Hubner, T.W. Randall and Henry Cook, sang the burial chant, then Mrs. Hubner, "Abide With Me," and "Crossing The Bar." Her casket was carried to its resting place in Greenwood by attorneys who were members of the Harvey County Bar association.

Dorothy Boyer Somers was born in Chicago July 29, 1895. She came to Newton with her parents in 1905. After being graduated from Newton High School she attended the University of Kansas. While always the closest companion of her parents in their home life, she always found time for service for others. When but in her childhood, her most worthy work to every phase of the Red Cross, and solicitation for war funds was accomplished with great executive ability and yet in so unostentatious a way that her splendid capability was the admiration of all who knew her. Her activities in the auxiliary to the American Legion have been warmly commended. She was instrumental in its organization and has held state offices and the various office of the local auxiliary, having been president the past year. She was a great worker in the Episcopal church, and particularly among children. She was beloved alike by the old and the young, taking much pleasure in the children of her brothers families.

She was married to Attorney John P. Flinn, October 17, 1922 and they had resided at the parental residence of Mrs. Flinn. Besides her husband and her parents, Mrs. Flinn is survived by two brothers, J. G. Somers of Newton and Hall Somers of St. Joseph, Mo., and their children.
