Hurley, Eleanor

Eleanor Lorene (Owens) Hurley, 81, passed away on Sunday (Oct. 3, 2010) in her family home after a brief illness. Lorene, as she was known to family and friends, was born in Manhattan, where she helped her parents and sisters manage a candy store in Aggieville known as the Snack Shack. She was an avid follower of Kansas State’s athletic teams. After marrying, she and her family lived in Raytown, Mo., while her husband attended dental school, then in Stockton and Newton, where Pryce practiced dentistry. She was a great helpmate to her husband, serving as office manager for Pryce’s dental office for many years and as an officer of the Spouse’s Auxiliary for the National Academy of General Dentistry. She was active in First United Church of Christ, having served as a deaconess for several years. Lorene was a wonderful mother and grandmother, very involved in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives. She logged countless hours assisting the family in raising and showing beef cattle and sheep, and attending her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events and school activities. She served as a leader for the Macon 4-H club. Her family and friends will miss her quiet counsel and wonderful sense of humor. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Pryce; daughters, Susan Hurley Yoshiwara of Los Angeles, Shelley Hurley of Blanco, Texas, and Shawn Hurley of Newton; a son, Lance Hurley of Livingston, N.J.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Lindall. Memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at First United Church of Christ in Newton. Flowers or memorial contributions can be sent to First United Church of Christ in Newton, 210 E. Fourth St., Newton, KS 67114.
