Edna Schmidt, 97, died Friday (Feb. 12, 2010) at Schowalter Villa in Hesston. She was born on Oct. 18, 1912, in Peabody, the daughter of Peter and Mary Seibel Unger. A lifetime resident of Goessel, she lived in Hesston the last 10 years. She was a homemaker. She married Ferd Schmidt on April 23, 1938, in Hillsboro. He preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 2001. She was a member of Tabor Mennonite Church, rural Goessel and the sewing circle. Survivors include three sons, Jerol and wife, Delome of Newton, Ronnie and wife, Judy of Lehigh, and Larry Schmidt and Debra Hogan of Alva, Okla.; a daughter, Sharon Schroeder and husband, Richard of Topeka; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Helen Janzen of North Newton. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Harry; and two sisters, Gladys Balzer and Alice Hanneman. A funeral service was at 10:30 a.m. today at Tabor Mennonite Church in rural Goessel with the Rev. Corey Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Tabor Cemetery.
