Thomas Hanna

Thomas “Tom” Hanna, 84, died Saturday (Oct. 31, 2009) in Newton.

He was born on Dec. 16, 1924, in Newton to Ida Sophia (Bachmann) and John Robert Hanna. He was in the 1942 class of Newton High and the 1950 class at The University of Kansas, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

He worked as manager of several wholesale liquor firms, was appointed director of Kansas Alcoholic Beverage Control and was elected Shawnee County commissioner.

Tom served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he attained the rank of second lieutenant.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, VFW, Moose Lodge and Arab Shrine Boaters Group of Topeka. Tom was a man of solid faith and a loving father, grandfather, brother and friend.

He is survived by his daughter, Michelle and David Wilkins of Dallas; son, William “Jeff” and Kelly Hanna of Dallas; granddaughter, Jess Hanna of Dallas; brother, Robert John “Bob” and Evelyn Hanna of Wichita; sisters, Mary Jane Bell of Houston and Flo Hanna of Newton; seven nieces and two nephews, whom he loved dearly; and former wife, Adelaide Schutz Hanna.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William “Bill” and Terence; sister, Delia; daughter, Christine; son, Jordan N.; and first wife, Mary Anne Clardy Hanna of Dallas, formerly of Wichita.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with Rosary at 3 p.m.

The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newton, with graveside services immediately following.

The family would like to thank all of Tom’s caregivers at the 1212 Greenhouse Home, who loved and cared for him for the past two years, and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.
