Otto N. Schmidt, 67, of rural Buhler, road maintenance for Alta Township, died Saturday (Feb. 26, 2000) at Newton Medical Center.

He was born March 27, 1932, to Nickolai and Susan (Unruh) Schmidt. His mother survives of Newton. He married Nancy Ratzlaff May 8, 1959, in Inman. She survives of Buhler. He was a Buhler area resident for 24 years, moving from Goessel. He was a member of Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church in rural Inman. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Other survivors include: two sons, Nickolai Schmidt of Newton and Dobby Schmidt of Hutchinson; three daughters, Jody Ratzlaff of Hutchinson, Shelly Loganbill of Moundridge and Kelly Pankratz of Fresno, Calif.; four sisters, Julia Regier of Moundridge, Susan Duerksen of Hillsboro and Delome Schmidt and Rita Sperry, both of Newton; and 13 grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church with Pastor Dean Linseameyer officiating. Burial will be in the Hoffnungsau Church cemetery. Cremation has taken place and will be no visitations. Memorials have been established with American Cancer Society in care of Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church in rural Inman. Moundridge Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
