Herman Klaassen, 94, passed away on Saturday (Jan. 1, 2011) at Kansas Christian Home in Newton.

He was born near Whitewater on June 14, 1916. He was the son of Abraham and Margaret (Wiebe) Klaassen. He was a graduate of Whitewater High School and attended Butler County College. He was a contractor. On May 19, 1938, he married Elvera Regier. To this union, two sons were born, Jim and Larry. Elvera passed away on Oct. 11, 1983. Later he would be united in marriage to Lula Rempel Dyck. She also would precede him in death on Aug. 4, 2005.

He established the Newton branch office of Source of Light. He shared the God’s Word everywhere he went, handing out small wooden crosses and reading materials.

He is survived by his sons, Jim Klaassen of Peabody and Larry and wife Beth Klaassen of Gillette, Wyo.; stepson, Ron and wife Jenny Dyck of Elbing; sister-in-law, Talma Klaassen of Whitewater; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Edna Harder and Irvin, Harry, Rolland and Ted Klaassen.

Visitation with family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Emmaus Mennonite Church in rural Whitewater. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday also at the church. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery in Newton will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Memorial funds have been established for the Sharon Harder Missionary Fund or Boy Scouts of America in care of Lamb Funeral Home, P.O. Box 358, Whitewater, KS, 67154.
