Briggs, Ruth

The Newton Kansan

Ruth M. Briggs, 90, of Newton, died Thursday (Jan. 27, 2000) at Newton Medical Center.

She was born April 7, 1909, in Peabody to George W. and Edith (Lovell) Parker. She spent the first 15 years of her life near Peabody and moved to Newton in November 1924 with her parents and two brothers. She graduated from Newton High School in 1928. She was the last surviving member of nine children. Ruth was a member of First Christian Church, Deaconess Emeritus of the church, Harvey County Hospice and Newton Medical Center Auxiliary. She also was member of the former Comwolei Club and Themian Club.

She married James H. Briggs Feb. 17, 1929. He preceded her in death in 1984. Survivors include: two daughters, Irene Shaw of Wichita and Dorothy Vogt of Bartlesville, Okla.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church in Newton with the Rev. MyCherie Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Newton. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home. Family will greet friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Briggs' home in Newton. Memorials have been established with First Christian Church in Newton in care of the funeral home.
