Covert, Martin - Personal History

History

His parents emigrated to America when he was eleven years old and located in New York City. Later they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where they lived on a farm in a section of city which is called Lockland. At the age of thirteen he became a boatman on the Erie Canal.

When he was a little over Seventeen years of age the Civil War broke out and he enlisted at Camp McClain in Company F., 75th Ohio Volunteers. He served throughout the entire war and took part in most of the important battles. He was in the following battles.

Ft. Montery, McDowell, Franklin, Strussburg, Crosskeys, Cedar Mountain, Freeman's Ford, Water Soo Bridge, Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Hazerstown and Ft. Wagner cregg. In December 1864 he was mustered out and returned to his home in Hamilton County, Ohio.

On October 11,1866 he married Miss Sarah Lindley. He and his wife moved to Kansas in 1871 and took up a claim which is now the Sam Dunkleberger farm. The farm was sold in 1883 and the couple moved to Newton to reside. He served the city as Marshall for four years. He worked as station master for the Santa Fe for seven years.
