Mr. Darling was a U.S. Army veteran of World War I. He was a member of the former E.U.B. Church in Newton, a 50-year member of the Masonic Locge, a life member of the Elks Lodge, member of the Newton Old Timers Club, and the American Legion. He was a former coach at Bethel College, a sports official, and a former member of the Newton School Board.He was retired from the Santa Fe Railroad. He was married to Bess Benn in Newton. One daughter Diane Claassen a brother Roy J. and a half-brother, Fred Heffelbower.
