George came to America about 1857, locating in Peoria, Illinois, and came to Newton in 1885. In the same year he was married to Elizabeth Calvert in Strong City, Ks.

George was a carpenter and a contractor, having been a foreman in the construction department of Santa Fe Railroad, for many years and in later years as builder of a number of Newton's best residences.
