HONORED CITIZEN GONE TO REWARD

John T. Smith, a well known resident of this county, and Civil War Veteran, passed away at his home at 617 East Eighth Street Thursday afternoon about 2 o'clock after a lingering illness. His funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Baptist church, conducted by Rev. Alpha Ingle, pastor of this church.
John T. Smith was born at Breckenridge, Ky., Jan. 29, 1843, and later moved with his parents to Meade county Kentucky, and was engaged in farming when the Civil War began. He enlisted in Co. C, 12 Kentucky regiment, and was in service for three years. After the war he returned to his home county and again became engaged in farming. In 1867 he was married to Miss Sarah Brown, at Brandenburg, Kentucky. They came to Kansas in 1885 and settled on a farm near Sedgwick. Later they resided in pleasant township, and then moved to Newton and have been residents here for over sixteen years.
Mr. Smith was the father of nine children two of whom died in infancy, and of the seven surviving, all but two were at his bedside at his last illness and to comfort the wife and mother. The children were Mrs. L.A. Laramore of Kansas City, Mrs. Sam Wolf of Topeka, Mrs. Addie Howell of Putnam, Mrs. Hallie Stone, Mrs Arthur Utz and Jessie Smith of Newton.
