Symons, Timothy

Timothy Harris Symons, 64, died on Thursday (Feb. 3, 2011) at Midland Hospice in Topeka. He was a resident of White City and former resident of Junction City.

Tim was born on Nov. 8, 1946, in Bend, Ore., to Norman and Dorothy C. (Sanborn) Symons. Tim enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1966 during the Vietnam War. He spent the next 21 years as a proud soldier. The recipient of numerous military honors, Tim spent 13 years serving in Germany and retired with the rank of sergeant first class at Fort Riley as part of the Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Division.

He is survived by four nephews, Kurt Symons, Charlie Ruble, and Bill and Lance Chaffin; two great-nieces; and two great-nephews. He also is survived by his former wife and good friend, Beverly Metcalf, and sisters-in-law, Charlotte Symons, Lois Ruble and Dana Chaffin.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. A graveside committal service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Star Cemetery in rural Burrton. The Rev. Stephen Baxter will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the soldiers of Fort Riley. Memorials may be left with Paralyzed Veterans of America or Mirror Inc., in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
