Fisher, Lloyd

History

Mr. and Mrs. George E. Fisher and Mrs. Lloyd Fisher received word from the War Department that their son and husband Lloyd E. Fisher had been killed in action in the Leyte Peninsula engagement, giving November 29th at the date of the engagement.

Tech, Sgt. Lloyd E. Fisher was 31 years of age and was inducted into the service of his country in June, 1941. He had seen 32 months of overseas service and went to the Philippines with General MacArthur from New Guinea where he had been stationed. Sgt. Fisher was mortally wounded by Japanese machine gun fire while participating in our attack on enemy positions near Liman, Leyte, Philippine Islands. His action in this attack involved uncommon heroism and courage. At the time of his death he was endeavoring to resume contact between his platoon and the remainder of his company, which had become separated in the violent assault. In doing this he voluntarily diverted fire to himself. Before he was killed he succeeded in his mission. He has been awarded the Silver Star posthumously for his gallant conduct and exemplary leadership in this action. Lloyd was laid to rest in the American cemetery near Caregara on Leyte, with full military honors and rites according to the dictates of his church. Lloyd was always a beloved and respected friend and comrade to all who knew him. He was the most popular non-commissioned officer in the company and excellently qualified for his position of leadership.

His wife the former Darlene McMillan continues her home in Newton. Lloyd is also survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Fisher and his three brothers Harold, William and Ralph. All three brothers served in World War II.
