Jacob 'Jake' Vogt
HESSTON -- Jacob "Jake" Vogt, 81, died Friday (Dec. 17, 1999) at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.
He was born Sept. 10, 1918, in Buhler to Cornelius Jacob "C.J." and Gertrude (Epp) Vogt. His parents preceded him in death. He attended Buhler Township grade schools until the eighth grade. He married Leah Elizabeth Koehn Oct. 3, 1942, in North Newton. She survives of Newton.
He served in the U.S. Army from October 1942 until December 1945 as a medic in Germany. He received a purple heart for an injury he sustained.
He was a member of First Mennonite Church in Newton. He enjoyed music, especially quartets. He also enjoyed reading, gardening, yard work, playing horseshoes and fishing with his grandchildren. He worked for KGE as a meter reader before retiring in 1983.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Sharon Nickel of Newton and Linda Ganoung of Gypsum; one sister, Justina Peters of Wichita.; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by: two sons, Richard "Rick" Vogt and Steven Ray Vogt; a brother, Curt Vogt; and six sisters, Katheryn Weins, Gertrude Vogt, Agatha Androes, Anna Epp, Mary Willems and Sarah Heidebrecht.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Mennonite Church in Newton with Pastor Clarence Rempel of the church officiating. Burial will be in Restlawn Gardens of Memory in Newton.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today and 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton. Family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Via Christi-St. Joseph Campus or Central Homecare and Hospice in care of the funeral home.
