Somers, John Jr

History

The following tribute to the memory of Lieut. John G. (Scoot) Somers, Jr., by Dr. A. E. Hertzler, carries a sentiment that is wholesome to the reflecting mind, and one that is worthy of more than one reading:

"The loss of every soldier is tragic to a certain group But Scoot was so well known that he seemed to belong to everybody. In this day when there is a national cry against neglect of children by their parents, we have here an outstanding exception. Protective by a loving mother, the constant companion of a devoted father, he seemed to literly grow up into the legal profession. With an exceptional mind no height seemed to be to great for him to attain.

"But he is gone. One would almost feel that the very gods defy parent's to dedicate their lives to their children. This makes it obligatory for all of us to study anew our own alleged civilization to determine why hate and war still rampant in the world. The time is long overdue when all bickering groups must forget their silly differences and unite for the common good.

"In losing Scoot, I too, as well as all members of the community, have lost a son." --A. E. H.
