Wendling, Leland

History

Sergeant Leland Wendling, son of Mr. and Mrs. Felix Wendling, was killed in action in Germany on March 5, 1945. He was back in combat after being hospitalized for five months for serious wounds received in the Aachen area. Leland was born Aug. 9, 1920, at Halstead. He was a graduate of the Halstead high school with the class of 1939. He engaged in farming in partnership with his father until he entered the service of his country in September, 1942.

He received his basic training at Camp Robinson and went from there to Camp Carson, Colo. He served also at Camp Polk, La., Camp Roberts, Calif., and Ft. George Meade, Mr., from which point he embarked for England. He entered Normandy shortly after D-Day, and was in combat through all battles from Normandy until he was seriously wounded near Aachen. He was hospitalized in England for five months, and re-entered active duty on Jan. 12, 1945.

Besides his parents, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Maurice Berger, and two brothers, Donald Wendling a prisoner of war in Germany, and Tommy of the home; grandparents, Mrs. Margaret Wendling and Mr. and Mrs. A. W. King; many other relatives and a host of friends.
