Barnett, A M - Cutler's History of Kansas - 1902

History

Barnett, A. M. - hardware merchant, of the firm of Barnett & Foltz, was born in Estelle County, KY, January 29, 1849. He came to Kansas February 23, 1871, and located at Burlington, where he was employed in a dry goods store most of the time until he came to Newton, in February, 1877. Since locating here he has been engaged in the hardware business, the firm being originally Barnett & Stephens. In January, 1879, John A. Foltz bought Mr. Stephens' interest in the business since which time the firm name has been as present. The firm job farm machinery, barb wire, etc. to the extent of about 440,000 per annum, the entire sales being about $150,000. Mr. Barnett was married at Burlington, Kan., May 1, 1876 to Allie I. Stephens, whose birthplace was near Dayton, Ohio. They have one child, Ambrose M. Mr. Barnett is a member of the A. F. & A. M. Blue Lodge and Chapter.
