Klabau, Mary

The Newton Kansan

Kansan, Saturday, November 27, 1926

Mary Klabau was born in Marienburg, West Prussia, on January 22, 1849, and died at her home in Newton, kansas, November 21, 1926.

Grandma Klabau was well loved and respected by all who knew her and under the providence of God had reached the age of 77 years, 10 months and 1 day.

In 1880 she came with her family to America and settled in Newton, Kansas, which remained her home until her death.

It was Newton that she and her husband were converted to God and united with the Evangelical church. Some years later they transferred their membership into the German Methodist church of this city. Mr. and Mrs. Klabau remained faithful members of this church and in the membership of this church. Mr. Klauba died on January 18, 1913.

In April 1920 the German Methodist church was dissolved and Mrs. Klabau transferred her membership into the First Methodist church of this city, where she worshipped and in whose membership she lived a true Christian life to her death.

Her marriage to Martin Klabau occurred in 1872 and for 41 years they lived in love, established their home, reared their children and walked the way of life together until death severed their bonds which love had made.

Eight children were born to them, of whom only four are living today. They are two sons, Jacob and George Klabau, and two daughters, Mrs. Mary Sattler and Mrs. Lizzie Ritter, all of this city. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at two o'clock at the First Methodist church conducted by the Rev. D. H. Switzer and the Rev. George Knittle, the latter speaking in German for the benefit of the older people who could not understand English well. The Rev. E. E. Erffmeyer and the Rev. Harold Dickens assisted with the service. Burial took place in Greenwood cemetery.
