Mrs. Hilliard was a cook and restorative physical assistant. She worked for Peabody Memorial Nursing Home for more than 25 years.
She was a member and served as vice president of the mission at Second Baptist Church in Newton.
Survivors include eight sons, Harold Cook, James Hilliard IV and Rudy Hilliard, all of Lawrence, Terry Cook, Kansas City, Mo., Glen Hilliard, Anderson, N.C., Gary Hilliard, Peabody, and Keith Hilliard and Dale Hilliard, both of Wichita; four daughters, Sandra Hardin, Peabody, Nicki Carter, Hobbs, N.M., and Rhonda Smith and Tina Mitchell, both of Lawrence; a sister, Zerah Ervin, Jacksonville, Ark.; 37 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Hilliard Jr.; a son, Kevin Hilliard; and six brothers, Matthew Cook, Elbert Ferguson, Isaiah Cook, Jessie Ben Cook, Ira Cook and James Cook.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton, where the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
The family suggests memorials to the James and Ernestine Hilliard Scholarship Fund with the Second Baptist Church, sent in care of the funeral home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton 67114.
