Walters, Carl Jr



Carl H. Walters Jr., 88, employee of the Santa Fe Railroad, died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2000) at Kidron Bethel Village in North Newton.

He was born Aug. 25, 1912, to Carl Heinrich and Catherine Elizabeth (Repp) Walters in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. They preceded him in death. He married Hazel Boswell Oct. 26, 1936, in Olathe. She preceded him in death Sept. 17, 1996.

He was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad for 48 years, 11 months. He was first employed as a machine apprentice on Sept. 27, 1928. During his tenure with the railroad, he was a diesel maintainer, assistant supervisor of diesel engines at Chicago and Newton and diesel maintainer in charge of locomotive maintenance in San Diego during World War II. He was the night roundhouse machinist gang foreman and night roundhouse foreman in Newton from June 1, 1949, until retiring Aug. 26, 1977. He enjoyed woodworking and railroad history.

Survivors include: a son and daughter-in-law, Jarrel and Kellee Walters of Overland Park; three grandsons, Kerry Lee and Deanne Walters of Basehor, Kurt Vincent and Mindy Walters of Lenexa and Kristopher John Walters of Kansas City, Mo.; two great-grandsons Jacob Ausin Walters and Jesse Aaron Walter, both of Lenexa; and a great-granddaughter, Kristen Leigh Walters of Kansas City, Mo.

He also was preceded in death by: two brothers, George Carl Walters and Fredrick Wilhelm Walters; and two sisters, Edna Emilie Walters and Pauline Eva Augusta Walters.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at Petersen Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Susan Wheeler officiating.

Burial will be in Restlawn Gardens of Memory in Newton.

Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.
