Writing of John, father of James Gresham:

On Sept. 28, 1814, John, age 20, enlisted to serve in the Second War of Rebellion (War of 1812). He was a private in Capt. James Nedley's Co E, 2nd (Williamson) Regt, Mounted Gunman, Tennessee Volunteers. Records indicate that this company was at the Battle of New Orleans Jan 8, 1815, under General Andrew Jackson, and that John Gresham, soldier, was a resident of Maury Co., Tennessee. He was discharged April 30, 1815. On March 2, 1819, he purchased a quarter section of land in Pickens Co., AL, 2 miles south of Carrollton but did not take up residence there until 1834. In 1848 he was appointed guardian of Rebecca Fowler and in 1849, appointed guardian of John Fowler. On Jan. 10, 1849, he was appointed guardian for "infants" Katherine and Susan Gresham. He was a farmer in Lauderdale Co., and later in Pickens Co. AL. He was in Lauderdale Co. in the 1830 census. He and his first wife Elizabeth are buried on their farm near Carrollton but grave sites have not been located.
