Thompson, Hannah Elizabeth

Halstead Independent

Hannah Elizabeth Thompson, one of the very first settlers of Harvey county, closed her earthly career on the old home farm west of town Monday evening, November 22, 1917, having been confined to her bed for more than two years. The end came peacefully to the uncomplaining woman who had for so many years been a highly respected citizen for more than 46 years.

Elizabeth Grant was born in Ripley County, Indiana, daughter of Hiram and Hannah Maria Towne Grant on April 17, 1840 and had reached the age of 77 years. She married Buchanan Thompson in 1858 and with her husband and small family came to Harvey locating on a homestead two miles west of town where she had ever since called home. The husband passed away in 1895 and since then her son, Clarence and wife, have been looking after her welfare on the old home stead.

At the age of seventeen she united with the Christian Church and during her long life a deep sense of religious convictions guided her every act in her associations of the community of which she was a part of. While bedridden for 26 months, she bore her affliction without complaint, feeling secure in the promises of her Master. By her death a good woman has been called to the eternal reward and those who knew her best will keenly feel her departure.

She is survived by her son, Clarence and by four sisters; Mrs. E. C. Cadwell of Lake township, Mrs. Abraham Viersen of Greensburg, Kansas; Mrs. C. W. McMullin of Adair, Oklahoma and Mrs. William Morris of Belva, Oklahoma.

Services were held at the Presbyterian Church with burial in the Halstead Cemetery.
