Steele, Eldo M

Harvey County Independent

Eldo M. Steele, 89, Halstead, died Saturday March 22, 1997 at the Halstead Hospital. He was born April 28, 1907 to Ara H. and Hattie May Boyer Steele. He attended Mount Pleasant District #41 grade school and Halstead High School. He was the first football captain for Halstead High School. A lifetime Halstead resident, he was a retired farmer and former Harvey County Commissioner. He was a former township assessor, was a field man for the ASCS and was the first president of Midwest Wool Growers.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and American Legion Post # 231, both of Halstead, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #971, Newton, National Veterans Service Support and Disabled American Veterans. He served in Company I, 310 Infantry, 3rd Battalion, 78 Lightning Division of the U.S. Army during World War II. He served at the front of Acchen, Germany. He received a battfield commission at 1st Lt. He was awarded two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star, three different theater stars, a President Citation, the Lightning Patch, Comba Infantry Badge, Combat Leadership Badge and Good Conduct Medal.

Survivors: brother, Bobbie A. Steele, Hutchinson; sister, Louene D. McBride, Hays; sister-in-law; nephews and nieces.

Graveside service was Wednesday, March 26 in the Halstead Cemetery.
