Clarence Fredrick Ice

. Fred Ice, 89, 1200 E. 7th, a longtime local attorney, died Sunday (Feb. 10, 1991) at Halstead Hospital.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. James Anderson officiating. Family interment Ceremonies will be at Greenwood Mausoleum.
He was born Oct. 30, 1901, in Clements, the son of Clement V. and Jessie (Shaft) Ice. On June 24,1924, he married Mildred J. Branine in Newton. She survives. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he was an Elder.
He was a member of the American, Kansas and Harvey County Bar Associations. He was a member and past master of the Newton Masonic Lodge and was a member of the Arkansas Valley Chapter 27, Newton Commandery No. 9, Wichita Consistory, Midian Shrine, Harvey County Shrine and past District Deputy Grand Master of the 33rd District of the Grand Lodge of Kansas.
Mr. Ice was a member and past president of the Newton Lions Club, and Elks Lodge, VFW, and the American Legion. He was past 5th District Commander of the Legion and served on the National Military Affairs Committee of the Legion. He was a member of the Kansas State Armory Board.
He graduated from the University of Kansas School of Law in 1924. He served as Marion County Attorney from 1928-33, as Newton City Attorney from 1940-42. He also was a past Newton Board of Education attorney.
He was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army during World War II and served from 1942-45 in the European theatre. He was a member of the 44th Infantry Division, receiving a bronze Star.
He was past president of the Newton Area Chamber of Commerce, was a former board member and organizer of the Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America, served on the PMMA Advisory Committee was past president of the Newton United Fund and was on the Kansas State Bank board of directors from 1947-72.
He practiced law for more than 65 years before retiring in 1989 and enjoyed hunting and golf.
Survivors other than his wife include one son, Theodore B. Ice of Newton; one half-brother, George Stephenson of Clements: one half-sister, Rachel Mulford of Wichita; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Winifred Ice Dewell; one granddaughter Jane Dewell Osborne; and one great-grandson, Benjamin Dewell Osborne.
