Rev. Wilmer H. Nelson, 79, Newton, died January 9, 1993 at his home. He was the father of Jean Clark, Halstead.

He was born April 10, 1913 at Bartley, Nebraska, son of Jacob and Mary Elias Nelson. A longtime Newton resident, he was a 1937 graduate of the University of Kansas and a 1940 graduate of Evangelical Theological Seminary, Naparville, Illinois, receiving his bachelor divinity degree. He served in churches in Kansas and Nebraska, serving from 1940 to 1987 and he was administrator of Friendly Acres from 1962 to 1978.

He was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church and
a member of the Double Duty Sunday School class at the church, both at Newton, he was a member of the Kansas United Methodist West Conference, a member of the American and Kansas Association of Homes for Aging. He was on the board of directors for Friendly Acres, he was past president of the Kiwanas where he was lieutenant govenor of District No. 7, he went on eight church work camps around the world and he was a Boy Scout leader, both in Kansas and Nebraska. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Chaplains Corps in Europe during World War II.

On May 21, 1940 he married Pauline M. Hefty at Valley Falls.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline of the home, son, Roy Nelson, Hutchinson; three other daughters, Linda Nelson, Newton, Ethel Smith, Valley Center and Nancy Davis, Burns; brother, James Nelson, Dayton, Ohio; sister, Esther Watts, Newton, 8 grandchildren and 2 step grandchildren.

Services were held Wednesday January 13 at the Salem United Methodist Church in Newton. Burial was in the Restlawn Gardens of Memory, Newton.
