Trovillion, Vera F.

Halstead Independent

Vera F. Trovillion, 76, Halstead, died Saturday, August 21, 1993 at the Veteran Medical Center in Wichita. She was born September 23, 1916 near Peabody, the daughter of Samuel H. and Edna Ruth Yaunghgan Beaty. The family moved to Halstead in December of 1917. She attended Halstead schools, graduating in 1934.

Vera's father organized and was leader of the Halstead "Kids" Band in which Vera played the trumpet. Her love of the trumpet continued through her service career. In August of 1942, she enlisted in the Women's Army Corps and served in Des Moines, Iowa until she was sent overseas to New Guinea in November of 1944 where she played reveille and taps in addition to her regular duties.

After returniing to the United States after the end of World War II in November of 1945, Vera worked in Halstead until she went to Kansas City in 1947 for training with the airlines. If one word would describe Vera, it would be "independent". She was a career woman before it was fashionable to be one. She started working for Mid Continent in Joplin, Missouri and while there succeeded in getting her pilot's license. After Mid Continent and Braniff merged, she continued working for Braniff until her retirement in 1980.

On April 16, 1954, she married Vivian Trovillion in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. He presently resides in a nursing home in Kansas City.

After her retirement, she returned to Halstead and lived here until she suffered a stroke in January 1983. Her main source of entertainment and enjoyment after her stroke was watching and rooting for the Kansas City Royals.

She was a member of the American Legion Post No. 231 and the American Legion Auxiliary, both of Halstead.

Other survivors in addition to her husband include a daughter, Marta Trovillion Hanson, Williams Bay, Wisconsinn; sister, Dorothy Butler, Halstead; nephew, Robert E. Lee, Haven; niece Jeanette Emert, Halstead.

Services will be Monday August 23 at Kaufman Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Halstead Cemetery with military honors.
