Gladys Eileen (Oblander) Ruff
NEWTON — Gladys Eileen (Oblander) Ruff passed away and joined her husband, Ike, in Heaven on Friday (Oct. 14, 2011).
She was born on May 7, 1926, in Hillsboro to George and Anna (Shulz) Oblander. Gladys was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church of Durham. She grew up on a farm in Lehigh, and after high school moved to Newton, where she lived throughout her life.
Gladys was united in marriage to Raymond David (Ike) Ruff on Dec. 12, 1947, in Newton. During the Korean War, she spent two years with Ike in Oceanside, Calif., when he was recalled into the U.S. Marines. Gladys worked for the Axtell Clinic/Hospital from 1944 to 1950, and later from 1968 to 1988, when they both retired.
She and Ike enjoyed 20 years of life together following that retirement. After celebrating 60 years of marriage, Ike died on April 3, 2008.
Gladys was a member of First United Presbyterian Church in Newton. She enjoyed her family, loved music, was kind and gentle to everyone, and will be missed by all of us. She was a loving wife, a super mom, and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
During the past three years, she was a resident at the Halstead Health and Rehab Center in Halstead, where she was cared for by an outstanding staff.
Survivors include son, Rickey (Carol) of Derby; daughter, Karen Ann Elpers (Mike) of Northville, Mich.; grandchildren, Jamie Lynn Lang (Kyle) of Manhattan, Shawn David Ruff (Lacey) of Wichita, Jeremy Foster Ruff of Wichita and Christopher Michael Elpers of Northville; great-grandchildren, Tanner Michael Lang, Kaden James Lang and Madison Renea Lang, all of Manhattan. She also is survived by one sister, Shirley Schroeder (Robert) of Newton, and one brother, Harvey (Jo) Oblander of Phoenix.
Friends may call at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday, where family will receive friends between 4 and 5 p.m.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. The Rev. James W. Anderson will preside. Burial will be at Restlawn Garden of Memories outside of Newton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her memory to Good Shepherd Hospice in Wichita. Contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 67114
