Baughman, Ray



The late Ray Baughman died on May 24, 1999 after a brief fight with a lung infection. Dr. Baughman and Lucy were happily married for over just over 50 years. They have three grown children: Lee, Craig, and Ann.

Ray enrolled in Dallas Bible College and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biblical Education in 1960 and Theology in 1963. His Doctorate in Education was earned in 1974 from Luther Rice Seminary. He was ordained to Baptist Ministry, pastoring four independent churches in Texas and Alabama. He taught for thirty years of teaching on the faculty of Dallas Bible College and ten years on the faulty of Southeastern Bible College.

Born November 9, 1925 in Hutchinson, KS Died May 24, 1999 in Birmingham, AL. Born to Francis Edward and Ethel Baughman, surviving sister Mrs. Vada Hudspeth and brother, Ralph Baughman; deceased twin sister Faye Allen and sister Frances Rexer. Graduated 1943 Burton High School, KS state champion half-miler. Called into the US Army February 1944. Served as photographer and tank driver with the 26th Tank Battalion under Gen. George Patton in central Europe. Married Irma "Lucy" Smith April 18, 1949, by whom he had three children. Just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Owner Ray's Photography Studio in Perry, OK for nine years. During this time the Lord began to speak to him about the Lord's service. Enrolled in Dallas Bible College receiving his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biblical Education in 1960 and Theology in 1963. Doctorate in Education earned in 1974 from Luther Rice Seminary. Ordained to Baptist Ministry, pastoring four independent churches in Texas and Alabama. Thirty years of teaching on the faculty of Dallas Bible College. Ten years on the faulty of Southeastern Bible College. Developer and Dean at Dallas and Southeastern Bible Colleges. Author of ten books including The Abundant Life and The Kingdom of God Visualized. He was also a member of Tannehill Wood Carvers. Survived by wife, "Lucy" and children, Bryan Lee, Vancouver, WA; Craig Allen, Garland TX and Ann Elaine of Mesquite, TX; daughters-in-law Christi and Christine; grandsons Ryan and John Vancourver, WA. His Memorial Service was May 26, 1999 Ridout's Valley Chapel-Birmingham, AL. Burial in Restland Memorial Park-Dallas; Memorials to the Gideon's Bible Society.

Professional experience: Member of the faculty of Dallas Bible College of Dallas, TX for 26 years. Taught in the resident school and graduate school. Appointed Dean of External Studies and charged with developing the program for the External Studies Department. This program allowed a person to earn an accredited Bachelor's degree through external study.

Professor and Dean of External Studies at Southeastern Bible College of Birmingham, AL for ten years. Retired from the college January 1, 1996.

Founder and Editor of The Shepherd Journal Online Magazine 1997-.

Education: Kansas State College; Hallibut School of Photography; B.A., Dallas Bible College, 1960; Th. B., Dallas Bible College, 1962; Ed.D., Luther Rice Seminary. Majors in Bible, theology, and education.

Publications: The author of ten books, three of which have been translated into a total of ten different languages. Edited the Dallas Bible College News for 15 years. The author and/or editor of 50 accredited college-level external study courses.

Additional professional activities: Pastor of four churches: Paris Bible Church, 1962-63; Christ Community Church, 1966-72; Church of the Open Door, 87-88, and is presently helping plant a new church, New Prospect Bible Church.1996-98.

Professional memberships: ACCESS, Association of Christian Continuing Education Schools and Seminaries

Objective: To develop quality Bible courses for the Internet in order to train people to be more effective Christian workers for the Lord.

Awards received: Honorary Lifetime Membership to ACCESS honoring 36 years of service to Distance Education, 1995.

The Gold Book Award in 1990 by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association for the book, The Abundant Life, reaching half a million sold copies. It has been translated into seven languages.

Delta Epsilon Chi, the honor society of the American Association of Bible Colleges, 1977 Alumnus of the Year, by the Dallas Bible College for 1965.

Hobbies: Woodcarving, photography, and gardening.

Military service: Tank driver for General Patton's Third Army WWII.
