Nicholas Comes was born near Kochem, Prussia in the valley of the Mosel river which flows into the Rhine near Coblentz.

He came to America in 1850 as a steerage immigrant on a sailing vessel. He was 30 days on the sea. He left his native land dto evade military service. With the benefit of a pasport, traveling by night to evade police. All his earthly possessions wrapped in a handkerchief. He traveled by foot, eight days from home to Antwerp.

He landed in New York City with 75 cents in his pocket. A farmer by the name of Briggs was at the immigrant station looking for help. He took him to his home on the farm, where he worked until the spring of 1856.

In the spring of 1856 he was married in the Catholic Church at Gloversville N. Y. to Mary Ann Kohnle. In 1857 they moved to the state of Illinois In March of 1877 they came to Kansas and homesteaded near Burrton, where he lived until his death in October 1893.

He had one sister, Margaret.
