Marlon G. Portlock, 74, Newton, father of David Portlock of Halstead, died Monday, May 22, 2000 at Newton Medical Center. He was born May 11, 1926 in Walton, the son of Verald B. and Estelle Glenn Portlock. He married Verna Schroeder at Newton on February 3, 1952.

He was a carpenter by trade and worked for the John Schroeder Construction Comany in Newton for 42 years. He was a youth baseball coach, a 4-H leader, a Newton High School sports supporter and enjoyed being in the out-of-doors, especially camping, fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed roller skating and bowling and liked to dance, especially at weddings.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton.

Other survivors: wife, Verna of the home; two other sons, Darrell Portlock and Dwight Portlock, both of Newton and a daughter, Lynette Portlock, Newton; sister, Wilma Charlsen, Topeka; 8 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harold and Melvin Portlock.

Services were May 25 at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home Chapel in Newton, conducted by Rev. Michael Keating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery,
