Automobile Kills 13 Year Old Girl

Relatives and friends here were shocked and painfully sorrow-stricken to learn that Mildred Huntington, 13 years old, daughter of Mrs. John Gault, formerly of Newton, had been killed by being struck by an automobile in Topeka at 3:30 Sunday afternoon. The Topeka Capital tells of the fatal crash as follows:

Mildred Huntington, 13-year-old daughter of Mrs. John Gough, 825 Quincy street, was fatally injured as the result of being struck by a motor car driven by Walden Cheatwood, 16, of 626 Lake street, about 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The accident occurred at Eighth and Quincy and was one of a series of crashes in which three others were injured.

Cheatwood, driving east on East Eighth, lost control of his car at Quincy street. It ran over the curbstone, struck the girl who was standing on a sidewalk, and collided with a tree. The girl was first carried into Conwell's funeral home and then taken to Stormont hospital. Examination showed she was suffering from a broken thigh, concussion of the brain, bad cuts and bruises and a severe shock to her nervous system. She died at 10 o'clock last night.

Mildred will be brought to Newton tonight and funeral services will be held at the Carter Funeral Home, Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, and interment will be made in Greenwood cemetery by the side of her father, Thomas Huntington, who passed away about three years ago. She was a niece of A. F. Hartenberger of 607 East Second, and the great grand daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Spudig 435 East Eighth. Following the death of her father, her mother was married to John Gault.

The Topeka paper states an inquest will be held by the coroner, quoting the officer as asserting, "It looks as if the girl should have been at least safe on the sidewalk."
