Brown, Luther

Halstead Independent

Luther Brown, the first white male child to be born in Harvey County, passed away Saturday evening, December 4 at the age of 76 years. Death followed an illness of 11 months at the Halstead Hospital. He was the son of Edgar and Elizabeth Birch Brown, born March 11, 1972 on the homestead about two miles north of Halstead.

He was a member of a family of five boys and three girls; Lucinda, Mary, Ephraim, William, Emma, Luther, Elmer and Andrew. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Emma Deem, of Eddy, Oklahoma; one brother, Andrew who lives in Halstead.

Luther and his brothers engaged for a number of years in diversified farming and in the raising of registered livestock. He lived continuously on the home farm until 7 years ago when he moved to town.

He was a member of the Quaker Church north of town, uniting with the Methodist Church in Halstead on March 15, 1885; he was a main of good character and had many friends.

Services were held at the Methodist Church on December 7. Burial was in the Halstead Cemetery.
