Baumann, Fred

Halstead Independent

Fred Baumann, son of Peter and Elizabeth Lehmann Baumann, was born March 5, 1858 at Linden, Switzerland and passed away at the Halstead Hospital in Halstead, Kansas on November 30, 1943, reaching the age of 85 years, 8 months and 25 days. He was in fair health until a week ago, when he contracted a cold, which developed into pneumonia.

He came to America with a colony of immigrants, destined for Kansas. On December 26, 1883 he was united in marriage to Marie Stucky at Newton, Kansas, who was also an immigrant, coming from Rotherback, Switzerland. In 1884 they came to Halstead as groom and bride, seeking for better things in life than existed in their native land. In 1885 they moved to the farm located southwest of Halstead.

To this union, seven children were born; six sons and one daughter, all of whom survive and attended the funeral service. His loving wife preceded him in death on November 26, 1943. Sixteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a number of nephews and nephews mourn his loss, the passing of both the mother and father within one week, early settlers of this community and true pioneers.

The children are: John F., Altus, Oklahoma; Ernest W., Sioux City, Iowa; Fred L., Valley Center; Jacob H., Sedgwick; Alfred W., Burrton; Bernhard H., Halstead and Lizzie Grimsman, Mt. Hope.

In November 1923 he and his wife retired from the farm and have since made their home at 721 Chestnut, Halstead, where he resided at the time of his death. For nearly 60 years, he was a devoted husband, kind father, good neighbor and a friend to all.

He was a faithful member of the German Methodist Church, Halstead, until it dissolved. He then became affiliated with the Mennonite Church and remained a faithful member to the time of his passing. He was a sincere Christian and adapted Christ's teaching in his daily living.

Funeral services were held December 2 at the First Mennonite Church with burial in the Halstead Mausoleum.
