Enlisted In Army To Evade Capture

Frank Cushing Cone Sought To Hide His Identity Under A Soldier's Uniform.

Prisoner Is Returned to St. Louis From Columbus, O., Where He Was Detected by Police Description.

Frank Cushing Cone, who donned a soldier’s uniform to escape detection on the charge of stealing $843.00 from the Wells-Fargo Express Company, was brought back to St. Louis yesterday morning from Columbus, Ohio, where he was arrested.

Cone was employed by the Wells-Fargo Express Company in St. Louis until December 7, when, it is alleged, he ran away with a package containing $843.00. One of his duties was to meet incoming trains and carry money packages to the offices. On December 7, it is charged, he received this package, and nothing more was seen of him.

Cone says he went to New York, spent most of the money, and then his desire for a soldier’s life came back to him. He had seen service in the Philippines, and believed if he could be sent back there he would be safe from arrest on the charge of stealing the express company’s money.

From New York he went to Columbus, Ohio. At the barracks he enlisted under the name of Frank Cushing, dropping his last name. When the express company’s circulars arrived at the barracks where Cone was waiting to be sent to the Philippines he was recognized at once from the description and names.

The army officers at once turned Cone over to the State officials and notified the St. Louis police. Special Officer Crowell was sent to Columbus after the prisoner, and arrived with him yesterday.

Cone had been employed by the express company for a long time, and confidence in him was displayed when he was permitted to handle money packages.
