Dr. W. Leighton Hayes of 248 College St., a retired optometrist, died Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., in Schumpert Medical Center after a short illness. He was 65.
A native of Burton, Kan., Dr. Hayes moved to Shreveport in 1973 and practiced part-time with a local optical firm.
He was a graduate of Northwestern University of Evanston, Ill., and the Northern Illinois School of Optometry. His post-graduate work was done at the University of Huston.
Before his retirement, Dr. Hayes practiced in Alexandria for 34 years and was active in civic and religious organizations there.
A charter member and past president of the Cosmopolitan Club, Dr. Hayes was a charter member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church and a member of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, the American Optometric Association and the Louisiana State Optometrists. He was a mason.
The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Osborn Funeral Home Chapel. Al Jolly, minister of the Creswell Street Church of Christ, will officiate and burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery.
Dr. Hayes is survived by the widow, Mrs. Thelma Noble Hayes; a son, William S. Hayes of Shreveport; two brothers, Glen Hayes of Smith Center, Kan., and Gordon Hayes of Great Bend, Kan.; two sisters, Mrs. Ben F. Horton of Wichita, Kan., and Mrs. Glen Shropshire of Great Bend; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Charles Noble, Bill Bailey, Brade Lazarus Sr., Dr. R. Davis, Dr. W. Parker and Jim Stamatis.
