Helena 'Lena' Warkentin

Helena "Lena" Warkentin, 94, formerly of 712 E. Fourth, retired co-owner of Ott's Bootery in Newton, died Thursday (April 30, 1998) at Kidron Bethel Village in North Newton.

She was born Aug. 9, 1903, in Lehigh to Gustav and Lina (Weyand) Kessler. She married Otto G. Warkentin Nov. 11, 1923, in Lehigh. He preceded her in death March 29, 1967.

She was a member of the Bethel College Mennonite Church in North Newton, Soroptimist International, Credit Women and Lioness Club, all of Newton. She enjoyed reading and read many books from the Bethel College Mennonite Church Library. She also enjoyed refinishing furniture.

Survivors include: one son, Gary K. Warkentin of Newton; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by one brother, Rudolf Kessler; and one sister, Frieda Warkentin.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethel College Mennonite Church in North Newton with the Rev. Darrell Fast officiating. Private graveside services will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.

Memorials have been established with Bethel College Mennonite Church Library Fund or Kidron Bethel Village in care of the funeral home.
