Luriel R. Mathews

Luriel R. Mathews, 86, died Friday (Aug. 14, 1998) at Newton Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 7, 1911, in Burt to Forrest and India (Gordon) Randall. She married Clarence L. "Matty" Mathews on Sept. 5, 1929. He preceded her in death Dec. 25, 1996.

She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola. She was a graduate of Yates Center High School. She and her husband made their home in Yates Center, where they owned and operated a grocery store and clothing store. In 1958 they moved to Iola and she helped her husband with his real estate and insurance business. They retired and in 1994 they moved to Newton to be near family.

Survivors include: one son, Larry Mathews of Salina; one daughter, Janis Caudell of Newton; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola with the Rev. John C. Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Yates Center Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Wesley United Methodist Church and Good Samaritan Fund at the Presbyterian Manor in Newton, in care of Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Memorial Chapel, 16 N. Buckeye, Iola, KS 66749.
