PEABODY -- Norman Ray Stockebrand, 81, known to most as Joe, retired accountant, died Monday (Oct. 12, 1998) at Newton Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 10, 1917, in Yates Center, at the family homestead located in the country, to Louis Ernest and Alice Louise (Weide) Stockebrand. He married Maxine Sutton Aug. 17, 1941, at First United Methodist Church in Salina. She survives of Peabody.

He and his family moved to Yates Center when "Joe" was two years old and he attended school, church and grew up with brothers, sisters and several "double cousins." He attended Pittsburgh State Teachers College where he majored in business and accounting. He graduated in 1939.

He was drafted into the United States Army and served several years. He taught school at Peabody High School for four years. He was accountant for John Berns, Baker Furniture and Carpet, Culligan, Hillsboro Industries and Peabody Co-op. He also sold insurance.

He was a member of the Peabody United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge and past president of the Kiwanis Club. He and his wife moved from their country home into Peabody in January 1997.

Other survivors include: three daughters, Beth Brown of Elkin, W.Va., Patricia Becker of Olathe and Jo Lynn Lewis of Wichita; three brothers, Tom Stockebrand and Myron Stockebrand, both of Clearwater, Fla., and Ernest Stockebrand of Yates Center; one sister, Marilee Van Wye of Prairie Village; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Bradley Allen Lewis.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Peabody with Pastor Robert Priest officiating. Burial will be in the Prairie Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Baker Funeral Home in Peabody.

Memorials have been established with Peabody United Methodist Church and Peabody Community Living Center in care of the funeral home.
