Verna M. Unrau

Verna M. Unrau, 86, 3001 Ivy Drive in North Newton, homemaker and Herald Publishing Co. employee for more than 30 years, died Saturday (Oct. 24, 1998) at Kidron Bethel Care Center in North Newton.

She was born June 22, 1912, in rural Whitewater to H.B. and Marie (Schmidt) Schmidt. She married Walter R. Unrau Oct. 5, 1934, at Grace Hill Mennonite Church in rural Whitewater with the Rev. G.N. Harms officiating. He preceded her in death Oct. 31, 1987.

She was a member of the First Mennonite Church in Newton. She was a graduate of Newton High School. She lived in Newton all of her married life, moving to Kidron Bethel Care Center in 1995.

Survivors include: two daughters, Mary E. Birky of Adair, Okla., and Donna Klassen of Houston; one sister, Lea Good of North Newton; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by one grandchild, Stephanie Suzanne Klassen; three brothers; and five sisters.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Mennonite Church in Newton with Pastor Clarence Rempel officiating. Burial will be in the Restlawn Garden's of Memory. Friends may call until 9 p.m. today at Petersen Funeral Home.

Memorials have been established with Kidron Bethel Care Center in care of the funeral home.
