Orville E. Brunner Orville E. Brunner, 74, 517 W. 12th, retired engineer for the
Santa Fe Railroad, died Monday (Jan. 25, 1999) at Via Christi
Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus. He was born Sept. 4, 1924, in Newton
to Clarence and Rosa Lee (DuPuis) Brunner. He married Nadine Warnke
Jan. 30, 1946, in Newton. She survives of the home. He was a member
of the Meridian Baptist Church, American Legion, Wayne G. Austin Post
No. 2, both of Newton and the United Transportation Union. He
served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a machinist mate
second class. He was a member of Tin Can Sailors, an organization for
anyone serving on a destroyer during the war. He was city
commissioner from 1961 to 1977 and served as Mayor from 1962 to 1964,
1968 to 1969 and 1971 to 1972. Other survivors include: one son, Ted
Brunner of Newton; two daughters, Karen Robb and Darla Crowell, both
of Newton; two brothers, Ralph Brunner of Emporia and Richard Brunner
of Palm Desert, Calif.; two sisters, Julia Klassen of San Luis
Obispo, Calif., and Mary Margaret Wyman of Placerville, Calif.; and
six grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at
Meridian Baptist Church in Newton with the Rev. Jerroll Martens
officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may
call from 5 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at
Broadway Colonial Funeral Home. Memorials have been established with
Meridian Baptist Church and Union Rescue Mission in Wichita in care
of the funeral home.
