Weldon D. Morford

HOUSTON -- Weldon D. Morford, 73, died Saturday (May 8, 1999) at his home in Houston.

He was born March 20, 1926, in Newton to George Everett and Hazel (Jolly) Morford. He married Vivian L. Blankenship Dec. 4, 1948. She survives.

He was a 1944 graduate of Newton High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, where he served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

He attended Emporia State Teachers College and was later employed at Santa Fe Railroad. In 1954 and 1956 he was elected Sheriff of Harvey County. In 1956, he and his family moved to Florida, where he worked as a security representative for General Electric in Cape Canaveral and also worked in the early space program. He transferred to Daytona Beach with General Electric, where he worked in the defense program for the development of F-15 and F-16 jets and other related programs. He retired in 1989, moving to Newton.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Newton. He was a bus driver for the Newton Area Senior Center, where he also was a member of the Board of Directors.

He and his wife moved to Houston in 1998.

Other survivors include: one daughter, Linda Morford-Downey of Houston; three sons, Bruce D. Morford of Virginia Beach, Va., James L. Morford of Lake Limestone, Texas, and David L. Morford of Winfield; one brother, Galen Morford of Newton; one sister, Roumel Brown of DeLand, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, George Morford.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m., June 1, 1999, at First Baptist Church in Newton with the Rev. Alden Dick officiating.

Memorials have been established with Newton Area Senior Center in Newton.
