Laura M. Franklin

SEDGWICK -- Laura M. Franklin, 86, of Sedgwick, died Friday (Oct. 29, 1999) at Sedgwick Healthcare Center.

She was born July 15, 1913, in Smith Center to Lester and Lorena Belle (Strayer) Franklin.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Wichita, Trinity Episcopal Church in Norfolk, Neb., St. Ans Elms Episcopal Church in Wayne, Neb., and was a Canterbury Club sponsor.

She served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Navy Waves as a lieutenant junior grade. She was a member of the women's Naval Reserve.

She taught school in Gridley, earned her masters and doctor of philosophy in Northwestern University in Chicago, Sigma Tau Delta sponsor, taught English at Wayne State Teachers College in Wayne, Neb. for 31 years, retiring in 1978.

She enjoyed gardening and was very active with various college organizations.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Fogle of Wichita. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Avon William Franklin, Benjamin Lester Franklin and Donald Henry Franklin; and one sister, Emma Elizabeth Franklin.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Newton with the Rev. James Barnett from Omaha, Neb. officiating. Burial will be in the Ebenezer Cemetery in rural Burns.

Friends may call until 9 p.m. today at Petersen Funeral Home.

Memorials have been established with the Alzheimer's Association in care of the funeral home.
