Hanke, Ena



Ena Nell (Conard) Hanke passed away on May 25, 2014.

She was born to Lyman and Ida Conard on July 3, 1921, in Ransom. Ena graduated from Ransom High School and then went on to attend the Halstead School of Nursing, where she earned her nursing degree and became a registered nurse for the Halstead Hospital. She married Harry Hanke on July 18, 1942, and moved to Newton in 1945. Ena was an active member of the Church of Christ in Newton. She was a homemaker and retired as an R.N. in 1970.

Ena loved playing games with the family, including card games where she would usually beat everyone! She also loved getting a house full of grandkids, and doing different activities with them. Ena enjoyed watching KU basketball, going fishing, and crocheting. Ena also travelled in the summers with her son, Richard, and his family; her favorite trip included a 4th of July celebration in Big Sky, Mont. She relived the memory for years with friends and family members, describing the awesome sound of the fireworks display echoing through the canyons between the mountains.

Ena was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed.  She is survived by children, Richard and wife, Karen Hanke of Choctaw, Okla., Leann and husband, Gary Kingsley of Newton; grandchildren, Matthew, Jeffrey and Joshua Hanke, Geoffrey and Rhonda Kingsley, Brian and Kelly Kingsley, Deborah Kingsley; great-grandchildren, A.J. and LaTiffany Kingsley, Maryn, Caleb, Asa, Haley, Maycee and Mia Kingsley, Ella and Jett Hanke, as well as three great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Ruth and Peggy; brother, Willard; husband, Harry; and great-grandson, Preston Tolbert. 

Visitation will be held at Petersen Family Funeral Home in Newton on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, from 5 to 9 p.m., with family greeting friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held at the Church of Christ, 101 Columbus Ave., Newton, KS 67114, at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 29, 2014, with burial immediately following in Restlawn Memory Garden Cemetery.  Please send memorials to The Carpenter Place Children's Home, 1501 N.
