Colleen McCullough

Colleen Ann McCullough died on Saturday, May 3, at Presbyterian Manor in Newton.

She was born on Oct. 28, 1931, to Emmet and Lucille (Hurst) Bolze in Girard. Colleen graduated from Chanute High School in 1949 and was a proud member of the National Honor Society.  Colleen married Richard McCullough on June 19, 1949, at the First Christian Church in Chanute. They lived in Iola, where they owned the Dairy Queen while Richard attended college. In 1954, they moved to Newton, and Colleen worked several years for Midland National Bank, retiring as cashier. She then became a licensed real estate agent and enjoyed her new career.  Through the years, she kept in touch with many of her high school friends and people she had worked with. Colleen enjoyed planning parties and entertaining their many friends. Additionally, she had a passion and talent for designing and building houses, very much enjoyed playing tennis and bridge, as well as being active in many organizations, including Junior Reading Circle, P.E.O., Daughters of the American Revolution and was a charter member of Newton Women's Community Fund.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Richard McCullough; son, Stephen McCullough and his wife, Dr. Pamela McCullough; and grandson, William McCullough of Lawrence. She was preceded in death by her parents: Emmet and Lucille Bolze.

Trinity Heights United Methodist Church of Newton will host a memorial service at 2 p.m. Friday, May 23, in honor of Colleen McCullough.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been set up for Newton Women's Community Fund-Colleen McCullough Endowment or Trinity Heights UMC-Bell Choir.
