Arthur Murl Brackeen, 76, Christian ministry, died Monday (Oct. 18, 2004) at his residence in Newton.


He was born Sept. 30, 1928, to William Thomas and Velma Annemae (Jones) Brackeen in Van Zandt County, Texas. He married Thelma Dooley Jan. 22, 1945, in Gainsville, Texas. She preceded him in death Feb. 27, 2002.  He was a deeply devoted man to his Lord. He was ordained to the ministry Sept. 30, 1955, in Newton. He preached and shared the gospel until recently when he had health issues. He enjoyed people and had a great sense of humor. He deeply loved and enjoyed his family. He enjoyed music and wrote and played songs throughout his life. He eagerly anticipated the birth of his 16th great-grandchild.

Survivors include: five sons, Chuck Brackeen of Rose Hill, Daniel Brackeen and Herb Brackeen, both of Wichita and Stephen Brackeen and Mike Brackeen, both of Newton; two daughters, Ann (Brackeen) Schmidt and Donna Brackeen, both of Newton; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.  He also was preceded in death by: a son, Buddy Brackeen; a grandson, Richard W. Schmidt; three brothers, Jack Brackeen, Joe Brackeen and Leroy Brackeen; and a sister, Mary Dooley.

Visitation is until 9 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2004 with family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home.  Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, October 21, 2004 at First Baptist Church with pastor James Pauley of First Church of God officiating. Memorials have been established with First Baptist Church and Central Homecare & Hospice, both in care of the funeral home.
