Attempted Murder Case Moves To Sentencing

An attempted murder case moved closer to resolution, and will avoid a jury trial in Newton.

 

Martin Luther King Smith Jr, 44, of Newton entered into a plea agreement Oct. 9. Under the agreement Smith will serve 25 years in prison for attempted first degree murder and three counts of aggravated battery. Sentencing is set for 1 p.m. Dec. 17.

March 1 of this year Smith was arrested after he broke into a house and stabbed at least htree people, one of them a teenage boy, the son of a second victim and Smith's girlfriend at the time. He also attacked law enforcement officers when he went to the Harvey County Jail to turn himself in.
