Ethel Mae Myers Throckmorton, December
24, 1917 to March 28, 2015. The daughter of William and Maud Myers,
she was born on Christmas Eve in Irwin, Missouri, a beautiful
Christmas present to her family. Ethel contracted the famous bird flu
in 1918. She surprised everyone and lived for almost a century.
After graduation from Lamar, Missouri,
High School she married Fred Throckmorton and they were wed for 53
years until his death in 1989. Fred and Ethel lived in Kansas most of
their married life.
Ethel was kind, cheerful, gentle,
strong, resilient. Graciously she accepted what life offered and
always looked forward. She was a wonderful friend, daughter, wife,
mother and grandmother, a gardener, consummate pie baker and an
ardent Jayhawk basketball fan. Some of our favorite memories of Ethel
are the stories she told of growing up in rural Missouri. She walked
a mile to school at age five, learned to drive at age twelve and
shared many stories of the Great Depression.
She was preceded in death by her
parents, sister Lorene, husband Fred, and her son Garry. She is
survived by a daughter Linda (Mac) Gyllenhaal of Tucson and two
grandchildren, Kirsten Bert of Tucson, and Kyle Bert of Bozeman. She
is also survived by her dear friend Verna Classen of Newton.
The last years of her life were lived
in Asbury Park in Newton and the family wishes to express gratitude
for their care of Ethel. Burial was in the Iantha, Missouri,
cemetery. Donations in Ethel's memory may be made to Asbury Park, 200
