Burkhart, Dorothea

The Newton Kansan

Dorothea "Dot' Burkhart

Newton Kansan

Dorothea "Dot" Burkhart, 81, of Newton died Wednesday (Aug. 4, 2010) at Kidron Bethel Health Care in North Newton.

She was born on Feb. 10, 1929, in Newton to Sarah (Unruh) and John Frey.

Dorothea Burkhart reflected Christ in every part of her life. She loved her Savior and those around her with the Savior's love - it showed on her face. Her big smile, bright eyes and infectious laugh revealed the kind, gentle spirit and quiet joy within her.

Dorothea, or "Dot" as she was known to friends and family alike, made it a twice-daily practice of reading God's word. She prayed throughout the day. Much of her prayer-life centered on her beloved children and three grandchildren. She took special pride and joy in her granddaughters Meredith, Lilibeth and Melissa. We, her children, will miss her intercessory prayers and remember well, as children, finding Mom on her knees before God.

Dot, like many, faced exceptional hardship and loss throughout her life. Two daughters went to be with the Lord early in their lives - one at 3 and one at 23 years of age. Her husband, Ford, was taken to be with God four years ago. In every situation, she trusted in God and turned to Him for strength and comfort. We never once saw her point us anywhere but to God, His substitutionary death in our place for salvation, and The Word as basis for hope and life.

Dot is rejoicing in the presence of her Creator and Savior Jesus Christ.

Survivors include her son, Tim and Kristin Burkhart of Newton; daughter, Denise Barkley of Wellsville; and granddaughters, Meredith Burkhart, Lilibeth Burkhart and Melissa Barkley-Broadhurst.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ford Burkhart; parents; brothers, Walt, Dave, Arnold, Kenny and Ewald; and sisters, Viola Peterson and Eleanor Henry.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton with family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Charles West of the church officiating.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.

Contributions may be made to First Church of the Nazarene.
