Elda Bachman

1922 - 2015 | Obituary

Elda Bachman passed away Sunday (July 12, 2015) at Kidron Bethel in Newton.

She was born to John and Frieda Wiens on August 21, 1922 in Newton, where she was also raised. A lifelong member of First Mennonite Church, baptized on June 5, 1938, she carried her strong faith and love of serving with her through her entire life.

Elda graduated from Newton High School, and then attended Bethel College where she earned a teaching certificate. She taught at many country schools including Prouty School.

She married Dale Bachman June 7, 1946. They had four children together; John, Marvin, Ernie and Ruth. The family enjoyed camping and traveling together, a pastime that lived on even after their children were grown. Dale and Elda were members of National Hiker and Camper Association. They built two campers together and during the construction of one of them, she was able to put her love of sewing to use: sewing an entire canvas for a pop up camper. Elda and Dale also travelled abroad, visiting the Holy Lands, South America, and many times visited European countries. Elda also traveled to India for Mennonite World Conference. Elda cofounded Kansas Jayhawkers 4-H Club, she was also charter member of the Writers Club for the better part of 50 years. After her children were grown, she went back to Bethel College earning a Bachelor of Arts in Education, and taught at Walton and Santa Fe. She also tutored out of her home for many years, and taught at Weekday Bible School which was a large part of her life.

In May 2003 Elda realized a lifelong dream of earning a Certificate of Theological Studies from AMBS.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Tim Wiens, Elda's nephew, for his love and care for her. They also would like to thank the staff of Kidron Bethel for their attentive care of Elda.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother Curtis Wiens. She is survived by sons John and Pam Bachman, Marvin and& Brenda Bachman, Ernie and Paula Bachman; daughter Ruth and Will Beachey; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren.
